Okay, where should I start?

I guess a brief summary of how "I" got here today

It was the spring of 1976

when I arrived here in Logan, as a "walk on" football player

At the time, I was a lot more excited about "being done with school"

The naivete and exuberance of youth was serving me well at the time

So I celebrated, of course

Well, I really didn't have a specific plan

I knew I wanted to get started on my career

So I applied, and was accepted

Not long after that

I ran into a long-time family friend whom I had grown up with

I had heard of it

I had even purchased several pairs of shoes while I was in high school and college

He asked me if I would be interested in a job

But the idea of attaching my fragile career plan

We all make mistakes

I focused on my department store job through the holiday season

I wasn't sure it was going to be the career I was looking for

So, I called my friend again to see how he was doing

As I thought about how to approach this conversation

many different ways crossed my mind

but what I landed on was something that has served me well over my career

So what I want to do

is ask and attempt to give some insights on 3 simple questions

First, what do you want to do?

And third, what do I hope you do?

Obviously I don't think they have the same answers

Let's start with "What do you want to do?"

For me, as I said, the first thing on my list, celebrate

You've earned it. Go ahead

Personally, I recommend this for everyone

Spend a long 4 years for some of us

maybe a little longer for the rest

Graduation represents one of the most important milestones in your young careers

Now, how long you celebrate?

A day, a week, a month, a year

some of you, you might even take a lifetime. That's okay

Everyone has their own "clock"

and how fast or slow yours ticks, is entirely up to you

There's no one to tell you what, or when, or where you have to be or do

So whenever the celebration ends

then comes that ultimate question: now what?

We all face it and I will make few guarantees to you today

-- in fact, I won't make anymore --

but here is one

you will all answer it differently

There is no right or wrong answer to this one

These are always the type of questions I like

Some will choose the arts, some will choose the sciences

and some will choose to pursue higher degrees of academics

some will pursue business, and some may also want to enter politics

But all of you should think you can change the world

Because you can

Your generation has the blessing of timing, and you know what they say --

timing is everything

We live in a global community today

one that offers tremendous opportunities

We can connect and communicate instantaneously with each other all over the world

We know more about each other than at any time in history

That knowledge can also bring conflict --

between cultures, religions, even generations

And these will become bigger and bigger issues

if we don't all understand that we only have one world

There really isn't anywhere else to go

Life on earth is our only option, and it's a good one

But we need to adapt and change

environmentally, economically, and even socially

if we're going to keep it viable

Our world needs to evolve

and you are the people who will lead the evolution

Your generation is moving and creating expectations

and solutions at an increasingly accelerated speed

Don't let up on that
不要放松
Get involved, form an opinion, and make a difference

You can, and I would challenge all of you

you must for all of our sakes, whatever the pursuit
你们也必须这样 不管你们追求的是什么
I can only relate to my own experiences

You may feel like you need to create a master plan

target a final destination and define your expectations

My advice: Don't restrict yourself to anything specific

at least not yet

I have been fortunate enough to have traveled from the jungles of Africa

to the urban jungles of the world's biggest cities

I have seen hope in the faces of children living in conditions

that you would find hard to imagine

I can assure you the human spirit is alive and well

Find a way to tap into it and you'll learn a lot about yourself

You're smart -- smarter than any generation before you

But you're not wise, not yet

Wisdom will come with time. So respect it

Whatever you choose to do, make sure to include some options

Stay open to new ideas and opportunities

What you want to do, where you want to live, or even how you want to get there

You will never have more freedom than you have right now

Make the best of it

There are several characteristics I think are critical to achievement

One of the most important is curiosity

It leads to asking the question: Why or even why not?

A lot of the most amazing innovations of our time

have come out of that one simple question

It's a good one

Some others are listening, learning, and collaboration

I was once at a conference

with some of the smartest people in the world

actually a little intimidating to be honest

and someone said to me "Remember

A good idea can come from anywhere

and to be a lifetime learner is a great characteristic to develop and to utilize

OK, let's go to "What should you do?"

Well, my advice: Keep your options open, as I said

and create some "guardrails"

from which you can evaluate these options

When I say "guardrails" what I mean is

you have to figure out

what is it that makes you fulfilled

What are your passions?

What will make you feel satisfied at the end of the day?

If you talk to anyone that has achieved personal success

they will all tell you they have followed their passions

It's critical to success and self-fulfillment
这是成功和自我实现的关键
so take some time and figure out what it means to you

It will help

Expectations

Oh yeah

They are always part of the mix

A key point? Whose expectations are you trying to fulfill?

Your parents? Your friends? Professors? Siblings?

Significant others or your own?

There's only one that really matters

only one that you have complete control over

Make sure you know how to answer that one first

If you don't, you'll wake up some morning and ask yourself

Now that's not always a bad thing

I pretty much do that every day

I can't believe how incredibly fortunate I've been

I have stayed at the same company for 34 years

Sometimes I have to stop and ask myself why?

The original plan was to stay a maximum of five

I had options along the way

but I realized there were three questions

I had to be able to answer every time I considered another opportunity

whether it was inside or outside of Nike

First: Was I confident and prepared to be a success in the new role?

Because success breeds opportunity

Second: Was it an opportunity that allowed me to continue to learn new things?

Because you don't know what you don't know

And finally: Was it something I really had a passion for?
最后是 这件事我是否真的有热情
Because boredom will never allow you to do your best
因为做厌烦的事将永远无法发挥你的最大潜力
Beyond that, I didn't have a plan
除此之外 我没有规划
I felt that if I could answer those three questions in a positive way

I go ahead and take the role
我就会拿下这个角色
I considered changing companies along the way

but in the end

Nike always allowed me to answer those questions over the span of my career

I used the term "journey" earlier

It's an important nuance

because I believe that's what we're all on

It's not a sprint, although it's going to feel like one at times

One of the things we all learn over time is patience

not a term I've ever been comfortable with for most of my life

It really struck me when I moved abroad and had to adapt to a foreign culture

It was one of the greatest learning opportunities of my life

I finally learned there was more than one way to solve a problem

I hope that you want to change the world

Make it a better place

We can't continue to live the way we have

We're running out of natural resources

We're altering ecosystems and slowly destroying our planet

Our planet is big, but it's not infinite

It's not about using less

It's about doing it differently

That's where you come in

Look for new ways to create things, new ways to use things

Our planet has its limits

Respect and understanding will be critical to avoid conflict
